Semester Reflection

I have learned so much this semester, and I turned out to be better at a lot of things then I thought I would. Not only did i learn how to use numerous tools in photoshop and illustrator, but i learned a lot of things about having to actually pay attention to certain things which i think is much better. I have learned how to not get so frustrated when something doesn't work out and to stick with it because that would be better than giving up. When things are tedious and annoying, when the work is all done it will turn out that it was all worth it. When you finish a project and you are proud of it, it is a great feeling. Be able to show off your work is great. Sometimes i feel a little rushed, but in the end i finish. Maybe next semester on some of the harder more tedious projects we could get a little more time. That is really the only problem i had because im completely understood how to work all the tools to my best ability! Next semester i would like to work more in photoshop rather than illustrator, because although it may not be true, i feel as if photoshop offers more to do and has a lot of cool functions! So far i love this class and can not wait for next semester :)

Review Week 17

The author asks have you learned something?
I learned a more simpler way to understand serifs. Before I read that article, I thought an ascender was the actual serif, just at the top! He definitely helped me understand more clearly the different between all the parts. Now I have to go change an answer on my blogs! :)

Review Week 16

How many points are in an inch? How many points are in a pica? 72 points in an inch, 12 points in a pica

Of the seven classifications, which classification(s) would best work as body type? Why? a type of serif because it is best used for magazines, books, and you want to be able to read it.

Identify the lowercase characters that have ascenders? b,d,h,k,l,t,f

Identify the lowercase characters that have descenders? f,g,j,p,q,t

first font:
because it is very uniform
second font:
i think it is script because it is cursivey and curvy like script! it sort of resembles handwriting.
third font:
decorative because it is very... well... decorative. it is something you would use maybe if you are typing stuff for a scrapbook, or if you want to decorate.
fourth font:
slab serif, because it is still very uniform but it is more blocky and chunky letters.
fifth font:
decorative as well, it looks sort of like a circus theme. it is not something you would use if you were trying to be serious and if you had to make it small for people to read, it would be almost impossible.
sixth font:
serif, it has the little things that come off it.
seventh font:
serif, it is not as formal as a sans serif, but still very readable and it has the little things that come off it.

Review Week 13

Contrast: the black dot is easily contrasted against the white background.

Balance: There isn't a balance on this cat because there is more black fur on one side then the other side.

The side of the carrots are out of porportion. You can clearly see the proportions between the larger dot and the smaller dot.

There is a repetition of apples lined up in a pattern.

This is an example of rhythm. There is a very "flowy" feel to it.

This shows unity because they are similar objects, being leaves, and they are placed closely together.

This photo uses variety. It has many different colors, styles, shapes, words, etc.

This photo uses emphasis. Emphasis is where the eye looks to first, or where you want the audience to mostly focus on. Obviously the red catches the eye quick.

How do you add a layer mask to a particular layer? On the layer pallet, you click the add layer mask button which is 3rd from the left with a circle in the square.

What two colors are used to create the mask? black and white

Describe the process of using a layer mask? you make the mask, then you "hide" (not delete) parts you do not want to see so that you can use only part of the image. You can always bring the full image back!

Stephen Kroninger

What kind of art/design does he produce?
collages, editoral illustrations

In what publications/media studios has his work been featured?
Time Magazine, museums, childrens books, The New Yorker, The New York Times, short films,

This piece was published in April 2000. The principles of unity and variety were used. The different principles were all used to form a picture and made a bigger picture. The element of emphasis was used by colors.
This was published on Nickelodeon as a short animation clip. The design of repetition was used and again there is a feeling of united. Proportion was used between the two objects. The variety of the different principles use help to make the picture feel whole by using a lot of different objects to make it that way. There is ground and figures.

Review Week 12

How can you, as the designer, use principles of design to help compose a page?
You can use principles of design to use them to express the message of the work. All the different principles of design are used to make different things. You can use certain principles of design to make emphasis and have certain things want more of the attention.

What are the principles of design (define each in your own words)?
repetition - the repeating of certain aspects or principles throughout the whole artwork.
proportion - the relative size or scale of each element in the design, and the proportion of the parts of the design to the whole design.
balance - the distribution of heavy and light elements on the page.
emphasis - where your eye tends to go first, where the designer wants most of the viewers attention to be.
unity - the wholeness of a composition. the way that all of the elements work together.
variety - the usage of many different principles and elements in a design.
figure - forms, silhouettes, or basic objects
ground - the space around the figures, or the space that makes up the figures.
rhythm - the continuity, reoccurrence, or organized movement in space and time.
contrast - when two related elements are different. the greater the difference the greater the contrast.

Podcast #3 Principles of Design

Define principles of design? concepts used to arrange the structural elements of a composition.
What do the principles of design affect? the expressive content, or the message of the work.

What is the principle of repetition? repeating some aspect or element throughout the design.

Describe ways that the principle of repetition helps the composition/audience? a visual key that ties your piece together. it controls the readers eye and helps keep their attention on the piece. it helps the viewer navigate through the piece, and helps unify and strengthen tying together different parts.

What are ways that you can incorporate repetition into your designs? bold font, thick line, certain bullet, color design element, spatial relationship, particular format.

What should you avoid when working with repetition? not to repeat too much that it becomes annoying or overwhelming.

What is the principle of proportion/scale? the relative size or scale of the various element in the design. the relationship between the parts of the whole.

What is the most universal standard of measure when judging size? the human body

How can the principle of proportion/scale be used as an attention getter? unusual or unexpected scale.

What is the principle of balance? the distribution of heavy or light elements on a page.

Which kinds of elements/shapes visually weigh heavier/greater? large elements look heavier then smaller elements. irregular bare greater weight then regular.

What is another name for symmetrical balance? formal balance

Define symmetrical balance? the weight of the composition is evenly distributed on a central vertical or horizontal axis. identical elements on both size of the axis. solidity

What is another name for asymmetrical balance? informal balance

Define asymmetrical balance?  when the weight of a composition is not evenly distributed around a central axis. one dominant form is offset by other forms.

What is the principle of emphasis? the stressing of a particular area of focus.

What happens to a design that has no focus? nothing stands out

What is a focal point and how is it created? a center of interest. the area where the eye goes first. makes one element dominant, or most important either. all other areas are contributing. complex, darkest, lightest, etc.

How many components of a composition can be a focal point? no more than one

What ways can emphasis be created in a design? contrasting the primary element with its subordinates. sudden change in direction, size, shape, color, tone, line.

What is the principle of unity? the wholeness of a composition. the feeling that all elements belong together. does not have a beginning or an end. all parts work together.

What three ways can unity be obtained?
1. put objects close to one another in the composition.

2. make things similar. similar textures, colors, or shapes

3. direct vision by a line, actual or implied, that travels around the composition.

What is the principle of variety? pertains to the differences and diversity.

What ways can a designer add variety to a design? textures, color, shapes, and alter the contrast, tone, intensity.

Why is it important to find the right balance between unity and variety? too much unity can be boring too much variety can be chaotic.

What is figure? a form, silhouette, or shape. the part of the composition we pay attention to.

What is another name for figure? a positive shape

What is ground? the surrounding area around the figure. the negative space of a composition.

What is another name for ground? negative space/shape

When a composition is abstract (has no recognizable subject) what will the figure depend on? What does that mean? it will depend on the abstract relationship  between visual elements. the surrounding area around the figure is the ground.

Why must a designer consider the composition as a whole? because the viewer can view the art differently depending on the figure and ground relationship. it is a mistake to only plan the figure, the entire format must be in thought.

What is the principle of rhythm? the continuity, reoccurrence, or organized movement in space and time.

How is rhythm achieved? through the orderly repetition of any element.

What three ways can rhythm occur in a design?
1. the intervals between the elements, and often the elements themselves, are similar in size and length.

2. rhythm more organic or flowing sense of movement.

3. the sequence of shapes through a progression of steps.

How does rhythm help a composition/design? controlling the viewers eye movement. interaction

What is the principle of contrast? when two related elements are different. the greater the difference the greater the contrast

How can contrast help a design? call the viewers eye into the piece. adds a visual interest.

What is wrong with having too much or too little contrast in a design? too much similarity becomes boring, too much contrast becomes confusing.

What is the key to working with contrast? make sure the differences are obvious

What are some common ways of creating contrast?. created differences in size, value, color, type, texture, shape, alignment, direction, or movement.

Color Schemes

This uses the triadic color scheme. The colors form a triangle on the color wheel.

This utilizes the analogous color scheme. It has three colors that are next to each other on the color wheel.

This uses monochromatic color scheme. It has different shades of one color.

This uses the complementary color scheme. It has two colors that are across from each other on the color wheel.

This uses the color scheme split complimentary. It has one main color, then uses the two colors to the left ad right of its compliment.

Andy Warhol

Within what art genre did Warhol work?
pop art
Define the genre?
it is art based on modern popular culture and mass media.
During what years was he alive?
1928-1959

Daisy, c.1982
He uses red, blue, and a tint of yellow. This would be a triadic color scheme because they make a triangle on the color wheel. The artwork is very modern yet sketchy looking. It looks like something that would come out of like a weird camera or film or something.
Portrait of Maurice
He uses the colors blue and orange. This would be a complementary color scheme because blue and orange are across from each other on the color wheel. The artwork looks very real, yet it has sort of a different, rugged look to it. The colors and different shades show different parts of the dogs and make different parts stand out.

Review Week 9

Compare and contrast vector graphics and pixel images.
Vector graphics are defined by mathematical equations. They have great quality at all times. Pixel graphics are made out of pixels. Its hard to change the size without changing the quality.

What resolution is necessary to print raster images?
300 dpi

What resolution is necessary to display raster images on the internet?
72 dpi

Steve Jobs

Who is Steve Jobs?
he is the founder of Apple
What company was he CEO for many years?
Apple
What did he do for the computer industry?
he introduced a different system of computers and electronics. Steve Jobs created a whole new world of computers and made Mac/Apple products prestige and looked up to in the industry.
How did this man impact the graphic design industry?
Apple created new professions to graphic designers. Mac computers increased the need for designers, and put simple tools away. He made the graphic design and computer industry beautiful. Jobs made designers able to flourish, as they had not been able to do so previously.

Review Week 8

Why must designers pay close attention to how color is utilized within a composition?
because it impacts all of our visual communications. colors send the right tone and message and make sure you receive the right response. they create an emotional reaction.

Why is the color wheel an important tool for graphic designers?
first of all, it shows how you make certain colors and what colors are part of which. then it shows basic way thats colors are mixed, and which colors go together and the way they look good together. if you want to get a color scheme, and way colors look good together, then you can look at the color wheel and it will give you an idea of where to start and how to go from there.

Find an example of neutral colors utilized within a design (hint: google poster design). Near the sample, discuss why you feel the designer included neutral colors within the composition.
I think that the artist used these neutral colors of tones of brown so that the colors of yellow and blue and goldish would pop out. The neutral colors makes all the other colors show a lot more and makes the eye more attracted to them.
Briefly describe how we "see" the color of an object?
objects absorb or reflect the colors that are in the visible spectrum and the reflected colors are what we see.

Podcast #2 Color Theory

The right use of color can do what? maximize productivity, minimize visual fatigue, and relax the whole body.

Within the electromagnetic spectrum, which waves allow us to see color? visible light

Describe white light? equal parts of all color in the visible spectrum.

How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"? objects appear to be in color when the absorb or reflect colors in the visible spectrum. reflected color is the color we see.

What is a glass prism? a transparent, triangular object that breaks white light into all the visible colors in the spectrum. all colors can be see when refracted through a glass prism.

What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism? red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet

Describe hue? hue is the color itself. each different hue is a different reflected wavelength of light.

When does white light occur? when all the wavelengths are reflected back to your eye.

When does black light occur? when no light is reflected back to your eye.

How color is perceived depends on what? the type of light that it is seen with, incandescent, fluorescent, or natural light. colors can change according to their surroundings.

What is a color wheel? shows different results of mixing colors

What are primary colors? Name them? red, yellow, blue. no colors can be mixed to make these colors. they are our 3 basic colors

What are secondary colors? Name them? orange, green, violet. 2 primary colors are mixed to make these.

What are tertiary colors? Name them? primary and secondary colors mixed together. red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-biolet, and red-violet. primary color is named first

What are neutral colors? How can they be created? colors that dont show up on the color wheel. almost gray. very low saturations. blacks, grays, whites, and brown. complimentary color pair mixed.

How can a neutral color help a design? help put the focus on other colors or tone down colors that are emphasized on their own.

What are complementary colors? Name them? colors that are positioned opposite of each other. red and green, orange and blue, yellow and violet.

What is color value? the lightness or darkness of a color

What is a shade? adding black to a hue produces a low-value color

What is a tint? adding white to a hue produces a high-value color

What is saturation/intensity? the brightness of a color. full intensity when not mixed with black and white. you can change the intensity of a color by adding gray.

What happens when you mix complementary colors together? you produce a dull tone, when you put them side by side it increases the intensity

Describe color harmony? pleasing to the eye, engages the view, and a balance or order to the visual

What is a color scheme? harmonious color combinations. colors that are used to create style and appeal. based on the color wheel and the arrangement of color.

Describe a monochromatic color scheme? uses variations of tints or shades of one color. clean and elegant. go well together for a soothing affect. very easy on the eyes

Describe an analogous color scheme? 3 colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. one color is dominant and the other two enrich the scheme. often found in nature and pleasing to the eye. bright and cheery effect. can accommodate changing moods.

Describe a complementary color scheme? two colors that are opposite of each other the color wheel. draws a lot of attention, high contrast composition. seen in nature.

Describe a split-complementary color scheme? uses a color and its 2 colors adjacent to its complimentary color. will draw attention, but without the tension of a complimentary color scheme.

Describe a triadic color scheme? 3 colors equally spaced around the color wheel. strong visual balance

What colors are considered to be warm colors? yellows, oranges, and reds

Describe a warm color scheme? bold and energetic. appear closer, so do not overwhelm. needs to pop out, consider using warm colors in the design.

What colors are considered to be cool colors? greens, blues, and violets.

Describe a cool color scheme? an impression of calm, rarely overpowers the main concept, appear farther away. give an allusion of depth

Why is important to consider which colors are being used within a design? impacts all of our visual communications. the right tone and message. the right response. creates an emotional reaction.
