In this project we were supposed to use the shape and line tool to make icons that quickly got a message apart. We had a selection to choose what we wanted to make, and could only use black and white. I learned from this that i am more of an exact type of person, i want everything to match up and look sort of symmetrical, i'm not as free of an artist!
Assignment #2
In this assignment we were to use the pen tool to make a texture grid of vector graphics. The usage of this tool shows texture with value and space and just simple black and white. In the space textures, we were to utilize positive and negative space and in the value textures we were allowed to use gray. I learned from this that textures are very tedious and have a lot of detail.
Assignment #3
The objective was to use the color wheel right and make our own! We made all of our on colors on illustrate and used the pen tool to make the shapes.
Assignment #4
We used different color schemes to mimic Andy Warhol's pop art of Marilyn Monroe!
Assignment #5
In this assignment we used the ideas of layers and using different settings to merge layers. We used a bunch of little pictures merged into one to make a bigger picture!
Assignment #6
We used layer masks to mimic Stephen Kroniger's style. It is supposed to made of different, unrealistic things put together to make a picture for a children's book.
Assignment #7
We used layer masks, but unlike assignment number six, it is a realistic image. We put a picture of ourself with a famous group of people to make it seem like we were actually there!
Assignment #8
We had to use type to make up a larger image. My word was the word "wine" and I used sort of a scripted font to match the essence of wine. We had to pay attention to value and things like that. My design is dark through the bottle because it is supposed to look like it is flowing through the bottle from a puddle of wine in the middle. Then it hits the glass and bounces against the walls. I like how my design turned out to be so real and how I can tell exactly what it is. It is a good feeling! If I could do something differently it would have been to use more of just one letter rather then the whole word wine. And pay closer attention to how value was supposed to work in my design!
Assignment #9
We had specific fonts and principles of design that we had to convey using an uppercase letter, a lower case letter, and a number. We had to do figure/ground, repetition, and formal balance. This assignment was not as much of a challenge i feel like, but it was difficult to figure out how to maneuver and place each character to match the principle we were supposed to use.
Assignment #11
In this assignment we used photoshop to mix words with a picture and a texture. We picked a poem or song and a picture that we thought went with it. We used layer options to "mesh" them together (the texture, picture, and words). My song was "Castles Made of Sand" by Jimi Hendrix and I used a picture of a beach!
Assignment #12
In this assignment we took pictures of things that looked like letters, or could be manipulated to look like letters, and used emphasis to create the letter we wanted. This is called alphabetography. Then we used unity and rhythm to make them into an alphabet. It was easier for us to have rhythm because since we are putting them in ABC order, we are forcing the audience to understand and recognize that.
Assignment #13
In this assignment we used the idea of exquisite corpse, and we did a group project. We each were assigned a part of the body and were not allowed to look at anybody else's. We had to rely on formal balance in order for all of our parts to look good. Everybody's turned out really funny!
Assignment #14
For this project we were assigned a career and we had to make a career poster. We had to have a brief description of the career and a graphic that illustrates that career. I used lorem ipsum coming out of the mouth because that is a general term that every graphic designer knows, and my description pretty much sums up the whole career. I really enjoyed this project and I think mine turned out well!
Assignment #15
For this project we had to make an illuminated manuscript and a letter for it. I liked this project idea, but mine didn't turn out as well as I wanted it to. I had big ideas for the way I wanted it to turn out, but it just didn't come out on the screen the way I imagined it to. That's okay, it still looks good, but in my eyes not as good as I wanted.
Assignment #16
In this assignment, we had to make a timeline about all the podcasts we did. The timeline was about visual communication and how it came to be. I liked the way my timeline came out, besides the fact that the writing had to be so small you could barely see it. I wish that I had planned it a little better so that I could have had made the font bigger, but in the end i love the way it turned out. I like how the pictures looked in the boxes.... I liked this assignment a lot and learned something about the history of graphic design and computers!
Assignment #17
In this assignment we had to make a combimark, which is like a logo but with a picture and words. The company I did was Spin Records. I used a picture of headphones and a record because the word spin makes me think of a DJ and those two things are neccessities for a DJ. This project went by really fast and I didn't plan it much, but I really like the colors I used and I think it turned out good.
Assignment #18
For this assignment we had to make a wordmark. A word mark is just words that gets the point across. I did a flower shop logo and had a little flower coming off the S. I actually liked the way mine came out even though it is simple. It turned out okay!
Assignment #19
In this assignment we first made a logo, mine is the black thing with a pink lollipop coming out. Then we had to utilize that logo and make a business card. On the business card, we had to make sure certain things were emphasized more than others (visual hierarchy). On mine i wanted it to go: logo, "The Candy Shop", Randell Scism | Owner, the phone number/website, then the address, fax, and e-mail. I hope it worked!
Assignment #20
In our last assignment, we were to research and pick a social issue then make a poster on it. We were to make a portrait mimicking that of the Obama portrait and use a word and logo to get the message across. I chose the issue of Darfur in Africa. My logo is an outline of Africa with a peace sign where Darfur is located and my word is "peace" then in a lighter brown "for Darfur". My portrait is of a baby in Darfur, because that would be very effective in creating emotion. I used the color red because it is very eye catching and it draws attention to crucial elements. I think my poster turned out good!
